In 2011, Dräger Medical asked MMID to partner in the development of a new incubator. Initially, MMID was asked to support on the redesign of the incubator and to test the user interaction. Besides the design of the incubator and the conceptual design of the arm that attaches the hood to the incubator, MMID engineered the hood itself, the four walls of the incubator and the patient bed. The various design teams then worked out the separate projects in detail.
How do you make sure a baby experiences as little (temperature) stress as possible during the transition from closed to open care? Babyleo TN500 uses three synchronized heat sources to stabilize the baby’s body temperature: a convective heater, a dual radiant warmer and a heated mattress. These ensure that the temperature inside the device remains constant, even when the hood is opened. Due to the new stand-by mode, we were able to shorten the warm-up time of the radiant warmer.
The ergonomic design of the incubator ensures that caretakers always have easy access to the baby. The hood can be opened with just one finger. The height and tilt angle of the baby’s mattress can be adjusted electronically. The incubator has practical handles for easy maneuvering, integrated weighing scales and an X-ray drawer. MMID developed the hood in cooperation with Dräger and VDL Wientjes. The hood-arm and its mechanism were developed in partnership with VDL Group.
All components have been designed with rounded edges, round shapes and smooth surfaces, which makes Babyleo TN500 easy to clean and disinfect. There are only 18 parts that need to be assembled – far fewer than in other comparable devices. The completely closed servo humidification system is filled via an external reservoir and has an automatic, self-cleaning function.
