Project overview
Our collaboration with Famostar began as a design assignment to create a new emergency light sign which would be visually distinctive in the market and speaks to the company’s value of innovation. This device can be mounted either from the ceiling or the wall, and this should be easy to match the straightforward plug-and-play installation that Famostar is known for. There are many requirements on how these signs look, and there was also a desire to stick with known technology to eliminate risk.
Design Challenges
The primary challenge was to create a unique design using existing technology to avoid unnecessary risks. There are many emergency signs in the market, and there are strict regulations on how they can look, so we had to be clever in creating visual concepts to make something new and different while staying in bounds of regulations. Understanding Famostar’s values, industry requirements, and their competitors was crucial in the design process.
Innovative Aspects
The most innovative aspect of the project was achieving a visually striking design without introducing new technology. The floating shield design offered a departure from traditional emergency lights, providing a modern, futuristic, and visually appealing product for a variety of architectural spaces.
Impact on Safety Standards
While the core safety technology remained consistent, the design brought a fresh perspective to a functional necessity. The product did not alter safety standards but presented an opportunity to integrate aesthetics into an essential safety feature.
Collaboration with Famostar
The collaboration with Famostar was described as very positive. Both parties worked closely, with Famostar handling the internal technology and software aspects while MMID focused on the overall design and integration. Regular meetings facilitated effective communication and integration of design with technology, resulting in a successful partnership.
End result
The conclusion of the project was a successful product, which even received a Red Dot award for its design. This case exemplifies the successful combination of design agency expertise and client technology knowledge, resulting in a product that transcends its functional purpose to become a beautiful addition to architectural spaces.
