Project overview
Our goal for this project was to redesign the existing MM400 milling machine by Retsch, a leading manufacturer in the industry. They were looking for a redesign with a more modern look and a new touch screen interface. Retsch gave us the technical components, and our role was to support the design process, starting by creating and proving a new design and assisting in later technical development while collaborating with their development team.
Design Challenges
While integrating the provided technical components, one of the larger challenges was integrating a hinge in the lid without getting in the way of users. The display had to be accessible regardless of the lid position, and the hinge area needed to look neat and flush. In our interdisciplinary approach, we combined our design and engineering competencies to meet the need.
Innovative Aspects
In the holistic approach we take to design, several other improvements were made to the design in addition to the main goals. The redesign of the MM400 not only gave it a more modern look, but also better matched the look and feel of a modern lab environment. Focus on well-integrated components resulted in more flush surfaces which were also easier to clean. The design was focused on several improvements for the usability of the end user.
Considerations for Laboratory Users
By defining the user needs of laboratory users, we were able to steer concepts to best meet those needs. From understanding the workflow, we knew we needed to have clear user cues for the lid and ensure that the screen was assessable if it was open or closed. This way, lab users could have access to both the milling tubes and the display when the lid was open, and still control the screen when the lid was closed.
End Result
The redesigned MM400 milling machine has a modern aesthetic suitable for contemporary lab environments. Usability, cleaning, and look & feel were optimized with a focus on user-friendly features – all while using provided technology and components which were already specified.
