Proof of Concept for BabyLeo® TN500
The BabyLeo is an advanced incubator designed to provide optimal thermoregulation for newborns in both open and closed care environments, as well as the transition between the two. Using the proof of concept phase, we helped to ensure the functionality, usability and safety of this complex product, focusing on early identification of potential risks and providing tangible evidence that the concept would meet its ambitious goals. This early stage gave the client the confidence to proceed with full development, knowing that key risks had been addressed.
Key Deliverables in the Proof of Concept
Proof of concept goes beyond technical validation-it’s about providing practical, physical proof. For the BabyLeo, this meant designing and testing critical components such as the hood and mechanical arm, creating multiple models to verify their functionality. Mechanical testing ensured that parts like the arm moved smoothly and the hood provided the necessary protection. But the process wasn’t just technical. We also developed non-functional models to test with end users, using a femme panel of female healthcare professionals and mothers. These sessions provided valuable feedback on the product’s usability, safety, and interaction design, with more holistic reviews. For example, after testing, an adjustment was made to provide more knee space for caregivers sitting next to the incubator. At the end of this phase, the clients received a concrete deliverable that addressed both technical and usability aspects, ensuring that the product was feasible and functional from multiple perspectives.
Multidisciplinary Competences in Action
We always strive to create a proof-of-concept based on the highest risks identified and to gain confidence as quickly as possible that the concept is providing the expected solution. As risks can be identified in any discipline, e.g. business case risks, electro-mechanical risks, user acceptance risks, this requires a multidisciplinary approach. In the case of BabyLeo, skills such as project management, mechanical engineering, user experience and risk assessment came into play. The team’s ability to approach challenges pragmatically – by rapidly developing test methods that provide fast, insightful results – ensured that risks were identified and mitigated early on. Each function was thoroughly examined, allowing MMID to isolate and resolve critical risks early in the process. With this holistic view we could provide the client solid insight into potential obstacles, offer pragmatic solutions which were accepted by the user and a grip on further development.
Project Management and Risk Mitigation
By breaking the project into work packages, each with its own PoC, MMID was able to focus on the key risks one at a time. These work packages moved at different speeds, but MMID ensured that an integrated model was available for testing and review at each stage. This approach provides a balance of speed and thoroughness, identifying risks before they can impact the wider development process. Client collaboration was also key throughout. Frequent feedback and iterative testing kept the client involved in critical decisions, aligning technical solutions with business goals and user needs. These sessions are always a lot of fun because you have the hardware. You can really feel the project and iterate. This linear, iterative process allowed MMID to efficiently manage risk while adapting to real-time insights to ensure the project stayed on track and met all objectives. Because Dräger was also familiar with this type of process, we were able to stay realistic together.
Speed and Creativity in Proof of Concept Delivery
MMID is known for its speed and efficiency in the proof of concept phase. On the BabyLeo project, the MMID team was able to quickly develop working models that provided the client with concrete proof that their product was feasible. Whether it was testing the unique asymmetric arm lifting the hood or quickly validating mechanical components, MMID’s approach allowed the team to stay ahead of the curve. Clients are often surprised at how quickly we can develop tangible proof that moves the project forward. MMID’s unique blend of creativity, technical depth, and pragmatism ensures that proof of concept not only mitigates risk, but also accelerates time to market, giving clients a significant competitive advantage.
